last night i went to see samia’s band “drunken boat”, plus the terribles and bread and roses, at re:generation records in alllston. the show was really fun, they have a really great cramped basement show space and the store is great too, though sparse. mike and i talked about how we wanted to fill the place with our style hilarious garbage and what’s more mike talked to sue blanks about it and she was very pro. so when mike gets back from tour in two weeks we’re beta-testing “happy birthday mike leslie” there- many paintings and doo-dads. in the interim i’m making a special series of stuffed animals to sell there, with little comic books to blow minds open. pajama ghost!
my build-your-own-dulcimer-from-a-nice-kit-that-has-all-the-parts-but-you-lost-the-instructions-book instruction book came in the mail today, so that’s another nice winter activity for me, in addition to sewing animals and pieceing a quilt together and late night silk screening listening to old radio broadcasts and trying to make an electronic 555 thumb piano (based on an idea by chris forgues).
fujichia: keep it up, see what happens.
pictured: last night’s “dump duck” (which is what matt hallas calls inland seagulls).
ok, first things first, moving backwards from last night–
it was the star-faced hog last night when mike was printing out the covers to the new terribles cd. when i nearly went to sleep the night before, after the bread and roses / samia / yoni gordon / me show, it was an apprehensive little dude that i got of bed to make, while talking to little steve about krazy kat. i can’t remember the night before that, aside from making this
wavy worm. christmas day i watched creature form the black lagoon and the new bill murray underwater movie, plus me and mike and jenine played craps and i made this cute little watcher.
christmas eve i was pretty sick and resorted to making this hideous, knotted sea creature. the night of the 23rd was the worst of my illness but i had the foresight to make this
small mountain range earlier in the day, before mike and i watched “the incredible hulk”. and then the 23rd, with an illness infecting me unawares, i made this
cool gator with tight pants. ok? happy now?
i’m still sick but getting better. last night it reached what can best be described as “fever picth”, though on the “crazy” scale i veered more towards “as a football bat” than “as a shithouse rat”. almost no sleep last night or so it seemed, with “oye como va” stuck in my head and feeling hot and cold race around my body, the feeling i’m sure of warfare between the antibodies and pathogens and what not. no hallucinations in the traditional sense but for a while i was convinced the root of my pain was in J shaped-objects, or actually, somehow the shape itself. today i sat on the couch while steve god bless him kept the fire going. listening to archived x minus 1 broadcasts and a lot of old KPFA contemporary music stuff. a really really good find is this amazing anthony braxton intervew from the 70s, which is seriously perfect. ok ok.
i forgot- i’m working on a fever dream comic about two warlocks or possibly witches. george, is ti true your mom runs a witch store in worcester?
i’m sick with a fever and going a little crazy. i haven’t started hallucinating cubes endlessly bisecting but i’m anticipating it. my skin’s sensitivity has greatly increased but i’m still wearing tons of clothes and still cold. yes, i still made a stuffed animal, a little mountain range if you can believe it. too tired / messed up to put up the pictures. earlier today i put up the last couple days though, enjoy. too tired / messed up to link to them, but you can see them on the round-up page. i got a lot of movies on sale at the place and tomorrow i’m going to watch them- a hammer studios rasputin movie, lugosi dracula, creature fomr the black lagoon, buck rogers (with the queen score) and switchblade sisters (which i got because of that band nick curtin likes but then i realized that’s “strawberry switchblade” so oh well).
fujichia: not a blog.
nadav put up those pictures he took of me and mike leslie earlier in the fall. in the “portraits” section, we’re on pages 11 and 12, respectfully. readers who i have never met– guess who we are! (NB: the rest of this email contains spoilers).
after we took the pictures and nadav went home i realized i really should’ve taken a picture with my cat (since he has a couple good pictures of people with their cats and my picture is i guess a subconcious reference to bob dylan’s bringing it all back home again cover pic, one of my favorite albums / covers). seeing it now i realize there /is/ a cat in there, but it could be better.
also, it was a trend i recognized and opted into but i feel a little silly now being another picture in nadav’s (unstated) “boys with toys” series. the other day tiffiniy was over the house and referred to me as “jake’s room”– having just finished the alan moore swamp thing book in which it’s divulged that swamp thing isn’t so much a man that turned into vegetation but vegetation that thought it was a man, i couldn’t help but think- am i just a collection of plastic trinkets and dusty records that decided to walk around and if so what are the full ramifications of this?
also note in the picture the italian gary panter tribute magazine that mike t inadvertantly put in my box of junk at the as220 zine fest a million years ago which he probably thought he just lost. mike, it’s scatterbrainedness and not maliciousness that has kept this magazine at my house unbeknownst to you! i’m sorry it had to come to this.
got the camera back, so here’s them animals from the past few days:
cat with diamond-shaped face, personal computer, a forehead, and last night’s cat which is shaped kind of like a boat (pictured).
tonight me and pars watched a lot of internet videos with the new yahoo video search, mostly nasty dunks, suburban wrestling and cheerleader competitions. obviously we really liked this and this and imagine you will too. we watched a lot of those snl celebrity jeopardy things too but you can’t watch all those in a row. oh, and matt carroll lazy genius is burning me a dvd of the new battlestar gallactica show that he’s been bit torrenting (it’s on in england already but won’t air in the us for six months and he says it contains the best space battles ever and louis gossett jr.). i’m excited. don’t worry everybody, i won’t turn into holmes wilson whose ability to turn every conversation into a conversation about the internet has become the subject of riducule. but i am excited for all the developements, the internet sweeping the legs out from under television and what not.
oh yeah, i guess i never said this but i’ve been screening a lot of shirts for people and will for you. minimum order two dozen shirts. very reasonable rates, decent turn-around time. the shirts i use are sweatshop-free and come in a variety of styles, including an unbleached organic cotton model. in this manner i’ve avoided regular employment for a long time. email with questions.
lest you think i’m slacking, tonight i made a forehead, last night i made a personal computer, the night before that i made a cat w/ diamond face.
talking to lilah yesterday about screen printing and she says she’s working on designs that are more sellable. i tell her to get over it. this is the information age after all and we owe it to the world to make for ourselves the outrageous shit we dream of knowing that thems that agrees can find it. also it’s a case of making things that many may like vs things that some will love. in my opinion, not only is the latter empowering and glorious, it will also prove more cost-effective. holmes debated this and to him i posed the question who runs a successfull t-shirt business? in any event the proof was in the pudding as the “unsaleable” design proved most popular anyway in our current evening cluster. it was a crude drawing of a hammerhead shark saying “hey man, those pills were fake!”.
i made a seperate page for the want list and changed the never-accurate “mp3 of the week” to “mp3 why not?”.
fujichia: against all odds, a living.
ok, number one, i fixed up the links to the mouse and the phone (new readers note: number one is a person). it’s been cold but i’ve been warm except for yesterday when i had to bike down to the mailbox place. but my man mike at the TPC made cookies and you know what, that was pretty warm in a manner of speaking. plus he knew everyone’s name that came in and was positively buzzing with holiday postal center energy.
dan wars– i couldn’t figure out that joke you told me, even after i thought about it for a while. but i loved the punchline, so i looked it up only to find out that you had omitted a crucial turn of phrase, making the joke nonsensical. but all’s right now.
fujichia: it was and she is.
well, i got the camera back from kpars for an afternoon and took pictures of all the new stuffed animals- in order from last thursday: a smoky volcano, gorilla with glow-in-the-dark skull face, a droid, a quadruped with elongated thorax and mesmerizing face, a dromedary, a fiddle-headed dog, a telephone slug, a chicken snake, a cute little fellow, a two-button mouse. ok?
i spent the last couple of nights in providence hanging out with little andrew and jenine. friday i had a show at okie street and saturday i helped jenine with the big risd alumni sale, selling her glass beads and being a friendly chap. selling stuff and people watching was pretty fun. the show was (on my end) a mess. moreso than ever, really, and i feel like i barely made it out alive. but i guess people enjoyed it.
