last night we went to see pirate snakes 2, which is a musical that jeremy, amil, and jack the ultimate fighter put on. other bands played too, most notably heat bag, which is ren, zach, and carlos from russian tsarcasm. carlos recently moved to providence and he’s already in different bands with about 40% of the population, and all the bands rule. he has a really good way of writing songs, and singing them– a real casual wit and insight matched with a very individual sound. deer tick played also, but broke a string after only one song and quit. but the song was “goodnight irene”, so that goes a long way. with me anyway.

oh, i added some stuff to the want list- potentiometers, multivitamins, and fabric with printed figures or animals (such as superhero sheets or forest scenes). as always, if you can come through with a back-scratch i’ll counterscratch you bet.

  • last night there was a movie show at the dirt place and mike t read from zines beforehand and it was nice like lemonade. i saw ben and we hashed out our feelings w/r/t texas chainsaw– he is really averse to movie violence, but is now aware that texas chainsaw is a filmic milestone, and said he’d see it. embargo off!
  • kpars was in town and she tried to dye her hair back to it’s normal color so it can grow in and not looked totally effed, but it’s came out a weird tannish grey that makes her look like a golden girl. in other words, awesome.
  • i forgot to mention that cf and ben jones put out a new tabloid-sized newsprint zine (in black and purple ink) about batman. in addition to being like something out of a dream for me, it’s really awesome. try your luck- immediately send lots of money to: Cold Freeze PO Box 913, Providence RI 02901 get it from him in person- now on tour with USAisamonster!
  • my new party game is getting people together beforehand and as a group assigning everyone a different phrase to use in conversation with someone at the party. you can’t fess up what you’re doing until the next day at least, and it has to be somewhat believeable. at the party the other night, i had to say “you must hold on to this crystal and the power it holds”. nicole had to say “is that you want, senator? to see your son snackin’ on dog shit?”. last night kpars had to say “remembered freedom of post-pubescent jerk-offs”. it’s great, try it out! of course this all comes from the time i was pretending to be a hitchhiker to dan warsaw’s friend (and my future friend) nixie, and dan requested beforehand that i use the phrases “my brother’s the best with the hammer” and “i just kept rubbin’ it and rubbin’ it and rubbin’ it and rubbin’ it and rubbin’ it…”.

went to a party tonight and was talking to kpars’ old film teacher about “mean art” that makes you feel bad after watching it. i brought up texas chainsaw massacre and no one in the group had seen it! he said “i don’t like horror movies” and quickly lost interest when i told him that violent media like horror films and death metal were very important because they are the only popular art forms that get artistic carte blanche. texas chainsaw massacre is an amazing movie, it was made on a showstring, and it’s astounding the effects achieved with creative sound, editing, and mise en scene or whatever. i feel like it’s rare that i call anyone out here, but ben russell, i do not trust you, and if you do not see texas chainsaw massacre (the original) soon (alone, loud, and in the dark), i will continue to not trust you, and you will continue to be an uncaring and lazy film teacher. i mean, it’s not the greatest movie in the world, but it is great, and moreover it’s important! GWP!

yesterday at the show pete z from sinaloa gave me a dvd of edited footage from the last show at tyndall ave (where the anton bordman boys used to live, among others). well, i know i just said that cameras are usually a bummer at shows, but i guess it was pretty nice to have this document of this one show. anton bordman, the body, halo perfecto, manbeard, reddrum, and the insides all played, as did your humble narrator, and moreover it was my first show as a solo performer and i played in the bathroom and i had a really good time. on the video i eat poprocks and drink a beer and play a song that incorporates sounds from my belly. it was real nice to see everyone’s fresh faces, and to see the now-defunct anton bordman. thanks pete.

tonight was that show at mass art and it was good, especially throne of blood (pippi emerged from a coffin) and the lazy magnet set, where jeremy showed a movie he and jo dery had made that was the story told on the 7″. also we got burritos, it was good.

my new pet peeve is people taking lots of pictures during shows, and while it didn’t happen too much tonight, there were moments during the tiny hawks set when three different flash cameras were each taking a picture every 30 seconds. bummerrrrrrrrrrr. it was really bad two nights ago at the wolf eyes / prurient / kites / work 2 death show. prurient was playing (in standard shirtless mode screaming into two mics that were feeding into a mixer then a huge stack) and a horseshoe of people surrounded him. i was far on one side and on the polar opposite side, some nurd was seriously taking a big-league flash in my face every 4 seconds. not cool! in addition to hurting people’s eyes, taking too many pictures at a show pulls you out of the show, and you can’t really participate. also, every time the flash goes off, that moment freezes in a person’s mind and they’re forced to see the picture as you selected it. this goes for camcorders too! occasionally it’s ok, but generally it’s bad taste!

oh, about that show: wolf eyes was boring, kites ruled (he played for a really long time, constantly moving, and dancing, and cutting it off and bringing it back… really great), prurient i honestly couldn’t pay attention too i was so mad, and work 2 death was a work/death heart 2 heart collab that was a noise theatre about having an overbearing boss and quitting your job (or that’s what i took out of it)… obviously awesome.

gonna eat some pasta and go to bed. it’s officially autumn and good chilly sleeping weather with blankets and the windows open.
