ok, ok? it’s the age-old story that i get behind in my regimen, and then the longer i wait the more things pile up and the harder it gets to get back into swing. zo:
there was that show at clark, which was for the campus alternative newspaper’s 24 hour issue, in which an entire issue gets put together in a day from soup to nuts, and bands play and there’s free pizza. i’m not going to say anything about the magazine but the show was really fun. first there were a bunch of student bands, which were fun, and which featured some of my friends, then there was the goon block that consisted of fat worm of error, me, this was hypersection, and the terribles. the last band in the student block was a really bad “blues hammer” rock band, which was the soundguy’s band. there was definitely a group of people that were into it and when fat worm started playing there were a lot of great WTFs. before fat worm started a kid writing for the magazine came up to me and asked what they were like. i told him squishy, angular, noisy, of varying density, wet, arhythmic, shifty, non-rock-like, awestern, and so forth. many of us had just watched rize, the krumping / clown dance documentary, and it made a big impact. so there was definitely a lot of that. (krumping is a battle-oriented form of hip hop dancing that isn’t so much skill-based as breaking, but more emotion-based, like punk dancing, with body contact and wild experimentation). after FWOE i played a nice set with no surprises, then this was hypersection in all their ragged glory, and the terribles with a twangy madness as always but especially recently moreso, and we danced fun to that too. i also sold t-shirts and made some dosh, and there was free pizza and soda as promised.
the next day i was supposed to play at the flywheel for crystal stokowski’s art opening but it was seriously snowing so hard i couldn’t even get to the bus station ok? no joke. as i earlier stated, this makes four (4) consecutive western mass shows i’ve bailed from, but what could i do? day after was the big party at downhill mansion and it was totally fun. me & mike and mary wilson & little andrew made tapes, and kevin DJed, but the dance area was too far removed and to most people dancing was less the focal point than a peculiar backdrop (a small handfull of people at a decent-sized party going completely apeshit to iron maiden and lesley gore). all my clothes got pretty messed-up from jjbbuck pouring consecutive drinks down my pants but such is the stuff of life. maybe i said some stuff i shouldn’t have said, but maybe again, so it goes.
after those two big things what’s been happening? andrew’s been dumpstering a lot of food and it’s been amazing. i don’t know if people out there are looking down their internet noses at me right now, but eating from the dumpster is eating as decadent as you could imagine. chocolate cakes, cookies, truffles, a ton of avacados and eggs and cheese, pastries, hummus, tomatoes, apples and oranges, and lots of really good bread. totally rules. terribles played a show at qvcc the night of the party and i guess it was awesome. they said they played to no reaction whatsoever, but as soon as they sat down at the merch table they were swamped. mike describes the crowd as being very young, and noted it as likely that the terribles were the first crazy, nonformulaic punk band many present had ever seen. also some of the kids already knew mike from seeing him skate.
jjb buckmaster’s 67 song, 78 minute banjo cd is almost done. entitled “most successful poem” it’s a total doozy, tracks culled from the 5+ hours of banjo music he recorded over the summer when he was housesitting in a huge loft in new york with no money and a banjo and nothing else to do. it’s like i told homegirl the other day- flawlessness is not the goal. a compulsive habit of creation matched with an editorial mindset is a far more viable goal.
don’t forget there’s a show at forbes st this wednesday- lazy magnet, colin langenus (of usa is a monster), dan beckman (of impractical cockpit), AxTx (from buddyship), jimmy cousins, and robert francisco (of monster attacks noise machine). it’s the total thrashers playing pretty songs show, and it starts at 7pm because it’s a wednesday. beeeeeeee there. email for more details.
