still in carrboro, this is the next morning. the show didn’t have a ton of people was it was really fun. alyssa and mbp drove up from asheville, terribles got to play loud, i sold a bunch of pins and stuff, we went to a weird collegiate cocktail party afterwards and got inappropriately rowdy and ate a bunch of great cookies and sang “happy birthday to you” to strangers and made mostly friends as you could well imagine. one fellow who i call “penny jar” for reasons that will soon become obvious bought a cd and some other stuff and was going to write a check but then asked if i wanted his penny jar instead and i said ok. today we cashed it at one of those supermarket machines and there was totally $60 there! boss!

guestbook is bespammed again, i’ll try and figure something out.

hello from chapel hill NC! after our two new york shows we took a bunch of our off days and went to ocean city new jersey, where meredith’s family has a sweet house, and walked on the beach and got pizza on the boardwalk and went to the arcade and stuff. they had monster bash for a quarter, i was psyched. two days there and we drove to washington dc where we played a birthday party for a nice fellow named orion. the terribles played acoustic, it was fun. when the terribles started playing i went upstairs to all the people milling about, shouting “a band is playing down in the basement and music defines youth culture!” over and over again. real obnoxious. also there were black metal dudes there who didn’t know who cthulhu was/is. nonetheless there were many sweethearts there and we had a lot of fun. the nixt night, not so much. our show fell through in richmond and we were left scrambling for a place to stay, eventually calling party dog friends of meredith’s party dog friends. me and matt carroll hung out at the bar the lady worked at and talked about star trek, total outsiders. tonight we’re playing in chapel hill at the co-op but i’m worried no one is going to show up. there are no other bands booked to play with us and i think no one made a flyer. thems the breaks i guess. still getting fed, still have a few dollars to rub together but not for long. still and all, everything going great and it beats digging ditches.

ok, i’m done eating. our first show in new york, a beery house show, i believe i already addressed. the second show was a birthday party so it differed from the first show in that there was cake, and it was more a weed-and-wine crowd. afterward there was a dance party and that was fun too and usaisamonster stopped by because they live right down the street. earlier in the day (as you no doubt read on leonardr’s page), me and leonardr hung out for the first time in 9 years of friendship! it was fun, we walked around queens where leonard and sumana just moved, and went to the pita place and the health food store and picked things up and said things and put things down. once i get back from tour i’ll get leonard to come to worcester and play a show it’ll be awesome.

we slept at meredith’s after the show and then in the morning went to economy candy where the boys bought licorice pipes and candy cigarettes (ML is one of those people who feels compelled to eat chalk). drove to philadelphia where we knew we weren’t going to get on the show we had been tring to get on, so we just hung out and watched “they live” and ate vegan ice cream and realized that we left the box of the new terribles cds in new york. so we drove back to new york and now we’re taking off to ocean city where meredith’s got a beach house. tomorrow maybe baltimor but probably not, then an acoutic house show in DC, maybe richmond, and on to asheville friday.

meredith the rowdy came through with some phone calls and got us some nice fill-in shows, but yesterday in philly we just hung out for a little bit and today we drove back to new york to pick up the merch box we left behind. tonight we’re driving to ocean city to stay a night at meredith’s beach house, then down to DC for a nice brunch show i think.
can’t talk now gotta eat.

ok, a mess of shows fell through, anyone in philadelphia, richmond, dc, or anywhere between nyc and north carolina who can set us up a show email jacob at fujichia dot com.

last night’s show in brooklyn was fun- the curtins were there, but the real star of the show was eileen wu, jacob berendes west coast fan club president (and for some time a new york liver), who i finally got to meet. today i’m hunting down leonardr, a fellow i’ve known for 9 years without meeting or talking to on the phone. the van is fine, though a gas guzzler. the boys don’t now that i left for tour with a mere $26 ($15 of it borrowed from kpars). it’s cool, i sold some cds and stuffed animals, and i’m fine for food money for the next few days, got gas money from a well-passed hat.

meredith’s roomates are in the band meneguar, which i compulsively mispronounce to sound more like “manowar” but they’re good and they are playing clark university soon. littered around the apartment are slick magazines with their album reviewed in it, the sort of magazine that i have no idea who buys them or how they sell ads, and which i have a sickly fascination with. this morning the first one i picked up had an interview with jessica rylan, aka can’t, a super lady and my favorite band/performer/electrical engineer. it made me really happy. i should make a can’t fan page!

our jersey show fell through and we might be playing another show in new york tonight, splitting a set at someone’s birthday party? we’ll see what happens.

leaving on tour in the afternoon, first stop providence to pick up the car stereo faceplate at brinkmanistan, and maybe get the new kurzweill book about the singularity, then NYC to pick up meredith and play our first show (131 tompkins, take the L to the G and the G to mytle/willobee (sp?), starts at 8ish). leonardr might not be able to make it, but i’ll see him the next day come hell or highwater. nine years we’ve known each other without meeting or talking on the phone even. other pen pals i hope to meet: eileen wu, who i talked to on the phone once, so it’s not such a big deal. sorry i still don’t have locations for the other shows posted- i still don’t know them. if you live in these towns, email me, or just keep your ear to the ground. also, other towns, as things got changed again and i don’t know what.

now seeking financers/financiers for my new multi-thousand dollar art piece “what’s wrong with this bogus candy machine?”. i estimate i will need a thousand dollars just to get started (unless someone out there has a functioning candy vending machine, the kind with the coils). i estimate that the machine will make me back in excess of .1 times that in only a year. see also: what’s wrong with this bogus candy machine?” and other inspirational art at go-go-boots.com.

today’s listening:

  • world livestock auctioneer champions 1963 – 2005
  • faust forward.

    now everything is in slo-mo.

guys, our new jersey show fell through. can anyone hook it up for me and the terribles in or around new jersey on saturday the 21st? come on, be a mensch.

  • the line of impersonators gets longer and longer. last night i went to providence with ML and little andrew and JC to pick up the tour van (thanks xander!). i took the oppurtunity to pick up some stuff i left there on the way out and now it’s the only stuff i have in the new place. it’s two crates of records, my stereo, two blankets, and two boxes of action figures. pretty funny essentials but listening to records you love and haven’t heard in months in an empty room is pretty nice.

i’ve been thinking a lot about honor and so forth, and yesterday i got to thinking about how bill buckner should be remembered as the best player the red sox ever had. by single-handedly losing the world series for the red sox in 1986, bill buckner took the hit and preserved the best part about the red sox- the wanting without having that is fandom distilled.

tour dates (me and the terribles):

  • friday jan 20 nyc
  • sat jan 21 new jersey
  • sun jan 22 philadelphia
  • tues jan 24 baltimore
  • wed jan 25 richmond va
  • fri jan 27 greensboro nc (i think)
  • sat jan 28 asheville nc
  • between the 29th and the 4th we’ll be in or near or just passing through athens ga, gainesville fl, tallahassee fl, pensacola fl, chatanooga tn, and chapel hill nc
  • mon feb 6 bloomington in
  • tues feb 7 pittsburgh
  • thurs feb 9 albany ny
  • fri feb 10 home
sorry i don’t have all the dates but a partial list something anyway.

i don’t know if i mentioned this but when i get back from tour i’ll be moving in with christina liquors and mel, one floor above lilah, johanna, and andrea: a real hen house. i’ll be there until may, when mars madigan is taking my spot. i’m pretty psyched about this– i know it sounds dumb but i’ve never lived in an apartment before. it’ll be nice to not live with 10 people for once. and it’ll be weird cooking for myself all the time but i have lots of friends around and maybe we could have nights we cook for each other now and then. anyway i was worried about where i was going to go after tour and now i’ve found a great solution and it’s a load off. i’ve been couch surfing for pretty much all winter and it’s been driving me more than bonkers. i know that tour is going to be so good, and i know that living with mel is going to be great too, and i’m trying to remind myself of these things to stave off this feeling of a stress so pinching and acrid it makes me want to puke. give me the strength, lord, give me strength.
