ok, this is procrastinating when i should be applying for grants (you read that right), but anyway here goes. bruce sterling, in his latest , swipes that opening line from william gibson’s seminal cyberpunk novel “neuromancer”, about the sky being the color of a dead channel. i think about this line a fair amount, how the difference between 1984 (when the book came out) and now, is that now a television turned to a dead channel doesn’t get a field of static anymore (in most instances), but a perfect deep blue, and as such the metaphor suggests a very different environment, but one that is still sinister (although in a super-clean way that wouldn’t be considered sinister in 1984). anyway it doesn’t pan out this way in the sterling article, as he is explicitly referring to a gray and swirling atmosphere, but who cares, and stealing is no big deal.
oh hey, i’m playing a show this wednesday (the 7th) with mount gigantic and when walls were built (li’l kess’s band). 8:30 is what the email said, at irving forbush slept here.
also i figured out that thing with the thing, and then computered all day inside on a really nice day. laziness or sacrifice? who could know?
my art show yesterday was a total success, in that a bunch of people came and hung out at the store, i had a reason to do a mess of paintings (all of which i’m quite pleased with, except for the ones i’m not pleased with, which i threw away), plus i had the motivation to clean up and reorganize the store, and now there’s both more room and more stuff and it looks better. and there were cookies and suicide soda, as promised. commemorative handkerchiefs had to wait, though, as the thread count was too low to print on if you can believe it. i’m trying to have at least one new product (by me) every week now, and i’d really like to have weekly events too (although i have no plan for next week).
well, i finally got that new power cord, so my computer is again operational. now i’m trying to figure out how to integrate that midi controller i finally caved in and bought this week, the one that’s all knobs and faders (the uc-33). once i get that down, phone book is back. but right now i’m having trouble and the only stuff i find online talks about how easy it is to use but offers no actual help. bah!
