In July of 2004, Little Pancakes (being a house in Providence RI ) was asked by organizers of the street fair to make a booth. The booth they made was called “Olneyville Karaoke”, and it consisted of coercing passersby to freestyle a song based on a song title that they pulled out of a hat, over one of four prerecorded jams (recorded earlier in the day by Mike T, Dan L, and Lazy Magnet). Participants were secluded in a booth, unable to look anybody in the eye, but the sounds were piped out through a PA into the crowd, which was frequently dancing to the new song and often singing along with catchy choruses. As it says above, not all the songs are hits, but they all have their charm, and some are really fun– because everyone is just dome-piecing in a frantic environment, some really weird and sometimes true stuff come up. We have decided not to identify any of the people singing, but if you sang one of these songs and want to fess up, please do so in the comments below.
