maila nurmi RIP

vampyee2.jpg
maila nurmi (vampira) passed away thursday. she was 86 years old. she was not the first person to conflate sex and death, but she was the first person to make the union of the two fun.

What she had in abundance was the ability to focus a long and apparently rambling argument in a sudden, blazingly dramatic gesture.

if you want to pay credit where credit is due, somewhere, today, shriek.

it’s been so nice out lately, and i’ve been in fine spirits, and not just because of the weather but because things just been lining up. wednesday walking around in my shirt sleeves, doing errands with billy blue, getting a security deposit back from a previous landlord and immediately cashing the check, paying outstanding fines at the library, then i even tried my luck at the used bookstore and found a $10 copy of harry stephen keeler’s “sing sing nights” ($125 on amazon)! awesomme. then i got a ride with chris dooley to boston to see terribles and bone zone at the milky way in JP. it ruuled. dano was really insistent on lots of worcesters making it to the show to up the party vibe, so we did and it was. lots of dancing and carrying on in the fashion (which is, in boston anyway, apparently out of fashion). MZ got on the mic during the terribles set- “we’re from worcester. we have this much fun every night, every place we go.”. more than half of the people going crazy were ladies, having tons of fun and wall-of-deathing arm-folders. kevin posted some video here, but, oh, well, you’ll figure it out.

today was still beautiful, i walked around a lot again, did more errands, got some shit done. i’m not totally “killin’ it”, but i am definitely “digging the grave”.

note

mel made the point that just because ML is moving out, that does not necessarily spell the end of punk shows at the go go. this is true, and it does not serve my goals to be a downer about it. i will be 100% delighted to eat my words. make it happen– up the punks!

well, i have to say, the show last night at the q was pretty fun. there were a lot of people there, many of whom were strangers to me, everyone was having a good time. they still didn’t have plain green tea, so i just drank water all night. i ate half of annie’s vegan deli sandwich, it was ok, and i got the continued backstory on the place. so the backstory i had was simply “wealthy aunt”, which explains how they could be a business and have all this expensive equipment and seemingly not know how to use it (such was my experience the first two times i went in). the continued backstory is that “a bunch of ICP dudes” “took over” the java hut (the primary late teen slam poetry rec room), and all the couch rats jumped ship. but like i said, i had a good time, people were friendly. i cannot comment on the quality or value of the foodstuffs, as i only got water, but it was ina real glass anyway. long story short, it’s a clubhouse, which is whatever– everyone needs a clubhouse.

as far as the performances, i missed the first act, which only meant that things started dead on time, which means that people were there early, which rules. i played second and had a great time warbling and telling stories. it’s weird being on stage AND having everyone sitting down at tables, but so it goes. i forgot to sing all the special songs i was working on, so it goes. the foundation was really good, playing at a really moderate volume, which was pretty awesome. lots of people dancing and having fun. or rather, the usual suspects dancing and having fun, while weirded-out teens played cool. they have a really long instrumental riff-out that always results in the audience playing with the band like toys– this time me and elder sabatinelli lofted and chicken-fought annie and dave (bass and guitar), then later, dave was slowly pantsed. i really like dave and annie, a cool and rare super tight brother sister best friend pair. the drummer jerry is fun to watch too, it kind of looks like the drums are small animals and he’s trying to keep them from getting near his face.

i’m getting a little sick right now which sucks, so i’m drinking lots of miso and no dumb sugars. oh, the volunteer meeting at the store was yesterday and it was awesome! next week i’m only working at the store on saturday, which means lots of time to make stuff and have ideas. i’m psyched. god bless kelley parsons, volunteer coordinator and friend.

iron maiden is not a t-shirt

today at the store i told a kid that a fresh shipment of iron maiden shirts (in kids sizes) is coming in “tomorrow” and they look “really weird”. i told him that they featured eddie drinking a milkshake. change “milkshake” to “ice cream cone” and “tomorrow” to “next week” and this is 100% true. in the interest of “iron maiden is not a t-shirt”, it will come with a cdr of iron maiden, plus maiden covers by anton maiden and lazy magnet, and possibly some of the jason forrest iron maiden record if i can find it (kevin?). song picks and other artist recommendations must be submitted before tuesday.

wednesday night’s show was fun and i got a lot of zines and stuff, plus the new onion flavored rings several inch record, the one with the tite ML cover. i got elbowed really hard in the ribs– who left their elbows out? still really sore but without even a cool bruise. meredith and greg “fatal” harvester were there, i was so psyched to see them. hi greg! hi greg’s coworkers! last night went to providence to see black rainbow again, plus dungeoneer and a new jo dery + natalia band called baba yaga. it was in a totally moldy basement– pretty awesome. my favorite part of the night was meeting someone who was an electronic arts phd student at RISD and being like “oh, i’m an electronic artist– i made 420cats.com!”. anyway their intro line: “oh, someone gave me your number to talk to you about the torah as an early example of hypertext.”. sure don’t get that every day. or ever. well, once.

for what it’s worth, i had a really good new year’s eve- nothing super spectacular, i didn’t dance (because i don’t like dance parties, i like singalongs), i just walked around the dirt palace (i mean, the “trid ecalap”) and talked to people. sometimes party talk is frustrating, because you can’t get “a good conversation” with anyone. but that’s ok. i laid the groundwork for good conversation, and cleared up a few “we kind of know each other, but is this circumstantial or do we actually enjoy each other’s company?”-type unaskable questions. didn’t kiss anyone on new year’s eve, only on the fake preemptive countdowns a few minutes early, and only jenine and charlie, who i’d be with all year anyway if years past are any indication (which is good).

sam gascan art show at HBML today (friday) from 5 to 8pm with chips. show at the q with the foundation and i hate them, saturday at 8pm. my understanding is that i hate them is not an i hate myself cover band.

UPDATE: “i hate them” is actually “i hate zen <3″, and contains lowell harrison, aka “short harrison” (only so called because his hair is short and his dad, gray harrison,’s hair is gray. see also long harrison, curly harrison).
