today i watched (aka “spaceship venus doesn’t answer”), which was a cool czech/german 60s sci fi epic with great planetary sets and some really nice shots in cinemascope. it was good, based on a lem novel, with a cool idea (left unexplored) about putting all your culture’s valuable data in tiny autonomous robots with bug-like intelligence (not like 2-XL). i guess the most notable thing about the movie is that has a cameo as a nasal spray technician:
hi mike!
tonight’s show was aweseom… eli keszler totally destroyed on unaccompanied drums, with lots of bells, bowed cymbals, totally NUTS. also SICK. GM noised it on the guitar with also drum machines, backlit like the t rex album- super good. i played some boopy laptoppy sine wave stuff but i didn’t want to look at the screen so i stood up and held the fader like prince paul in the video. it was nice, it was a nice feeling. i was awash in sine wave waves.
in addition to the music being great, the dim sum aspect of the night was great, and i’m really happy i did it. i bought a proper steamer from the mekon and vaula helped me out in the kitchen, and yesterday and today i had help from apok, jose lynn, kpars, and psibs. we assembled a large amount ahead of time and froze them, which actually turned out to be kind of a bad idea (freezing them) but whatever. we made two kinds, but the best (to me) were the “green vegetables dumpling” with just kale and mushrooms. the other kind (in my opinion) just had too much going on, it was like a busy garment.
altogether, i think i lost $40 on the night, which is fine– i had fun, it was a good chance to actually work something out (in regards to computer music performance), i got to eat a lot of dumplings, and i got to create the world that i live in. also GM said he’d put out a tape of mine on rare youth, so that’s a big boost right there, easily worth $40 spiritual dollars.
oh fuck, and i found out that eli played with JANDEK recently! and that he considers one of his favorite bands (of the era) despite KD breaking his microphones at some show back in the day. no joke man! the nineties- THE NINETEEN NINETIES.
also, MZ told me about the recent that took place at UDUPI: 100% tip on an $80 meal for bold lives that declare their own fortune. I LOVE THE GOONIES!
. this is video from, believe it or not, my first show (i think)! it was at tyndall ave in providence, the year was 2002, and the show was with anton bordman, the body, halo perfecto, sinaloa, manbeard, the insides, and red drum (lee and danton bordman’s drum duo). GEEZ! tons of stars in the audience too… kind of freaky to look at now. in the video i eat pop rocks and drink a beer and mic my stomach. don’t try this at home, adults! pete z shot the video, and i’m really happy he did (even though i ice grilled him at the time about it). tyndall ave was where dan and aj from anton bordman lived, plus mike t and travis. this was the last show at this house. i had gone over there a few times, i was really honored when mike asked me to play, and i was PSYCHED when i saw the flyer- the first time my name had ever been screen-printed, and in three colors no less! well, enjoy!
friday i had a super-great time driving in cars, dining with pars, and opening jars. thanks universe!
bought some new records at armageddon shoppe. you were right about me not regretting buying the bo diddley record. i’ve always loved that other musicians have a song or a style or a sound that is theirs, while bo diddley is (to my knowledge) the only musician to have a rhythm. chuck, chuck, chuck, ka-chuck chuck. bo diddley is a gunslinger. the new daniel higgs record is good, but i heard the previous one on the drive to miami, that’s the one i need. the sword heaven record- good. the latest kites record- they didn’t have it, but they had it on cd, but i listen to records.
i’m listening to the daniel higgs record again, i’m going to sleep.
new organs if we but cultivate their need
[...] immortal fangs with which to butcher the carcass of time
this tuesday there’s a show at the fIREHOUSE with electroacoustic darling geoff mullen, improv percussionist eli kezsler, and plasma TVs (which is a new approach from me). also, there will be DIM SUM, which is to say, we are making a lot dumplings for the occasion. this is another early show, so doors at 6pm, music at 7. if you are inclined to bring a dish of some sort of fingerfood (vegan preferably), please do so and be greatly appreciated! deserts are applicable.
also on the chinese food tip, duck yao is back in a weekly formation, fridays and saturdays from 5 to 9. “Food is cheap: entrees under $7. There are taro tater tots and homemade wonton soup. There are fried balls for every gastro-desire.” yessssssssss!!!!!!!!! BE IT. write me for the address.
oh, and on the noise/improv w/non-musical eastern influence tip, western mass had a noise yoga show last week in a yoga studio with a for-real yoga instructor, a bunch of noise nerds, and a bunch of bands (incl. noise nomads and shirt quitters). IILWTMW!
today and last night working on some new sample-based music for the first time in a long time. after much hemming and hawing over new music softwares, i’m back to using sound edit 16, the same thing i’ve used since 1995 (NB: i have friends that weren’t even born in 1995). i guess it’s frustrating, but really nothing’s as good as it for what i’m doing. it’s really simple, and i thought for sure that there would be a new thing that did what it does plus hammers out a few kinks (multi-track recording, precise time stretch), but they all have their faults. audacity comes close, but the key commands are not there / don’t work / aren’t good, the labeling process isn’t as good (in SE16 you can label a part of a track then click on the label and you’re selecting that segment), and weirdly, it’s slower (?) on my new machine than soundedit is on my old machine. uh, i guess i’m mentioning this in the hopes that future audacity programmers will google “problems with audacity” and then email me for my valuable insight. also with this dedicated computer i have a new working method as far as track assembly, more “intuitive”, but let’s see what fruit that bears before we talk about it and how the fruit looks and tastes in our mouths and how we prepare and serve the fruit in a meal-type setting. don’t ask when this will be done. i’m also working on singing-type songs for the uke of XYZ split. don’t ask.
last night me, the terribles, crisp haddock and j9 all played a show at meg’s apartment in providence. it was fun, it was meg’s birthday. but i always forget that i don’t like playing parties, as much as i like being at parties. anyway i had fun. in the beginning of the night, things were so cramped and confined that it was really like pulling the blankets over your head– that kind of suffocation, and i had to sit by a window for a while. but after i played i could relax a little more and just hang out. i was looking for chamomille tea but couldn’t find any so instead peter fuller made me a coffee drink with chocolate and cayenne pepper and soymilk foam. i know, but this actually set me up great, i think less because of chemicals, and more because peter is just a super awesome guy who it is good to interact with.
i tried to play some new stuff but it was too rowdy so i just mostly stuck to old sing alongs. during my set CP was yelling all sorts of nonsense based on our “feud”, which at this point is more embarrassing than anything else. i told the crowd “CP can say whatever he wants– it doesn’t matter. and the reason it doesn’t matter is that CP is a boy, and jacob berendes is a GROWN-ASS MAN”. then everyone started chanting “GROWN-ASS MAN! GROWN-ASS MAN!”. ok, it was awesome.
this came up the other day, but today i finally looked up “138″ and what it means (in re: the misfits ““). i guess a casual glance at the lyrics makes it evident that it’s in reference to george lucas’ “THX 1138″, but the has a lot of way better ideas, including but not limited to:
Some say that 138 is the Police code for “Drunk and Disorderly conduct”.
138 is the highest The Misfits had come on “the charts” at the time.
It’s about sex (69 x 2 = 138).
It’s police code for grave robbing.
In the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah, the number 138 is said to refer to any ghoulish display of horror.
The song refers to the year 138 A.D., in which the Roman emperor Hadrian adopted Antoninus Pius on condition that Antoninus adopt Marcus Annius Aurelius Verus. The song is told from the perspective of Marcus Aurelius.
The song refers to the asteroid 138 Tolosa, which was first observed by Henri Joseph Perrotin on June 23, 1875, exactly 85 years before Danzig’s birth.
It means nothing.
In Rocky III, there were 139 men auditioned for the role of “Thunderlips,” a role which eventually went to Hulk Hogan. The song is from the perspective of the men who didn’t get the role. This also explains the mention in the song of “Eye of the Tiger”.
The “1″ represents a penis, the “3″ a scrotum, and the “8″ a pair of breasts, symbolizing that Danzig feels like an objectified, sexualized piece of meat.
Killing without emotion.
It was the number of Danzig’s father’s remarkably violent military unit in World War II.
i had heard the “killing without emotion” one, but i forget in what system 138 is code for just that. my favorite of course is the third from last, which reminds me of cool breeze’s “make 13 = pull someone’s pants and underpants down”. see also and .
. you can consider it a “two girls one cup” fanvid.
OK, starting now, if anyone out there wants to make their own music videos to one of my songs (either something from foreign policy or anything from the vaults), i will be super super delighted, and will send you a free fujichia t-shirt, and if you stop by the store, i’ll give you a soda. and the video can’t just be my song over some other video you cheapskate! limited to first 10!
