heather (a poet) says that every poet has a poem called “camera obscura”

inmyroom.JPG
so, for the record, i’ve had the camera (a casio ex-z600) for about a week now and i’m delighted. battery’s good, screen is big and bright, quick on the draw, quick refresh, good flash modes, videos, etc., all that stuff i said. i’ve been carrying it around wherever i go, but in order to avoid “kino eye”, that condition where everything is mediated by the idea “how would i capture this feeling in a photograph?”, i’ve been judicious in snaps. or rather, i’ve been ajudicious– sometimes i just take a picture of almost nothing, and oftentimes wonderful things happen and i just decide to remember it. at the same time i’m trying to be more like matt carroll, who has integrated his digital camera into his being as an extension– he’ll take a picture of a map or a list of phone numbers he needs to look at later, or if he can’t read something far away he’ll snap it and zoom in. the other day i took a picture of some song lyrics me and andrew wrote that we lost once already (for our band “space boyfriends“). pretty satisfying. also i got into that digital camera game where you flap your face around as fast as you can and then take a picture. any ideas for more frivolous digicam games / wastes? videos are still unexplored territory. oh, and now that i have the camera, the HBML webiste is back up “on the regs”.

picture above is my room, from the vantage point of my bed, which as everyone knows is not a bed but a pad on the ground. obviously i still don’t understand how a digital camera actually works, especially in low light– it’s not like the shutter stays open longer, right? holmes says that digital sensors will just get better and better and in a matter of years any photo with a flash will look dated. that’s cool. oh also, i use the free and pretty perfect photodrop application to make tiny gears i can drag a file onto to resize or rotate it. real nice. this has been photo minutia paragraph. we’re your paragraph, bakersfield.

NB: i’m obsessed with tagging, but i just made and destroyed a “minutia” category. because where to split a hair, america?

woman with a laser javelin, man with a dog

all i have for this blog post is the title.

reggae landscapers

yesterday was memorial day, i walked around a lot with jbruce, talking about things, and eventually landed at the sole proprietor, where we split a lobster and drank beers (jbb never drank a beer before and i am a vegetarian but there is always a time for transgression). ultimately it was positive in that i realized lobster isn’t that good to eat, and that i’d rather be eating a piece of fruit, or a big bowl of cereal. i didn’t throw up or even feel bad. jeremy only really drank half a beer and suffered no noticeable effects. i saw a fair amount of people i knew at the restaurant, which is the only reason i’m fessing up here, because they’re blabbermouths. well, it’s always interesting.

been painting the store this week with sheryl-ann, it looks awesome, except where it looks stupid, but you usually can’t even see the walls so no big problem. next step- tons of shelving. taking a lot of pictures with the camera, trying not to get “kino eye”, when you see everything the way a camera would see it, which is a bummer way to operate.

a scuttled joy of lying on a clean floor

cimg0036.JPG
the first time i ever saw one of these things i was already 20 years old and i wigged out. needless to say i stepped on it, and then in removing the sizable carcass with a tissue, one of it’s legs (and, apparently, a tiny bit of nervous system) fell on my hand and started twitching independent. so i instinctively squirted a mass of black ink out of a special aperture, hoping the predator would confuse this mass with my person, enabling a quick escape by a hair’s breadth. anyway i just now saw this fucking guy pictured above and laughed, because now there exists a category of bad thing i just laugh at, until i remembered that i sleep on the floor and these lousy eyelashes will sooner or later flutter across my resting peaceful open nostril. i cannot right now invent an expletive to describe this feeling, certainly one does not already exist.

anyway anyway, as you might deduce, this exact bug offered me the perfect oppurtunuty to mess with the new camera i just got in the mail. sure enough i was able to turn it on, navigate to “macro” focusing mode, and snap a few before it scurried under something i wanted to sit on. pretty sweet. the camera is a casio ex-z600, slim as a pack of playing cards, big screen, a quick draw, easy upload. too early to give a review but if the battery’s decent (and other reviews point to yes, and quite), it’ll be $100 well spent.

via wiki:

Young centipedes have four pairs of legs when they are hatched. They gain a new pair with the first molting, and two pairs with every subsequent molting.

this scutigera is 6 years old!

phone gnome

gnome.jpg
giant_phone.jpg

i’ve been getting a good number of calls lately to the fujichia “talkback” phone line, but i might as well post about it again. the number is
206 203 2911

and when you call it will go straight to a message machine, where you can leave me a message that will get emailed to my computer. this is not the best way to get in touch with me, but this is the best number to drunk dial, or if you find yourself singing in a particularly sonorous hallway, or if you have a funny joke, or if you just had a dream i was in, or for however purpose. again, i will never pick up. in fact, it is impossible to talk to me via this number. but i will get the message, and may use it in some form somewhere down the line (anonymously). put it in your phone. call any time.

if you want to call (maybe just to hear me pronounce “fujichia”) but can’t think of what to say or do, call and read an entry from this weblog a la sspoken wikipedia entries, and i’ll upload it and link to it from the original post. just be sure and say the date so i can find it. uh, first five people to do this get limited edition bandanas with awesome tigers screened on them. but still call when drunk or whatever.

was it a full moon in worcester yesterday?

for Nicky Louse:

this friday (tomorrow):

THE OLD HAUNTS (on tour from Olympia, feat. Tobi from Bikini Kill, Frumpies, The Go Team, etc)
STUPID PARTY (from NYC, where every party is a futile exercise in casual ignorance)
NASTY INTENTIONS (also from NYC, mike stoltz said that some of them are cute, and that they are husker dü-ish)
plus our own
TERRIBLES (”worcester’s most happenin’ band”)
and
MENTAL HELL (featuring “the prince of worcester” jon shirley)

this is at distant castle, ML said he wants to start the show at 7, i am not staking my good reputation to this wild claim

bring money

THEN
this saturday at HBML there will be another cool silk screening day, WHEREIN you bring in a reasonably blank garment (and $5) and we screen an imageof our choice onto it. this time around the image will be a kind of insane drawing of a tiger’s face. the face is fierce, with dripping teeth, the sort of thing you see right before you get your fucking face eaten the hell off by guess what guys? A TIGER. yes indeed, this tiger (the drawing of it) will really communicate to the world the idea “what i want i get and get = eat and eat = eat messy”. printed in bleck ink.

what else? i don’t know.

panbroiled cogs

badbrains-big.jpg
yesterday and today i had nice visiting with pen pal and regular pal emily bloodmilk, a known delight. still living in minneapolis and now, getting married! ding dong, baby! we hung out with purtle and had a really good drawing session, then today went on errands pertaining to the new HBML limited edition sneaker (this is real). driving around i kept forgetting which one was left and which was right, so i got back into saying [driver’s name] for left, [passenger name] for right. lots of this: “go emily. ok, not this light but the next. go me. ok, go emily.”. which greatly contributed to our PMAs. ah, lucky be the line that landed emily!

oh, and in re: last friday and poetry, we sidled into gerardo’s bakery on pleasant (right downtown) and the guy tries to sell us a CDR of his friend playing viola and children (!) reading his (the counter guy, gerardo’s) poetry! $7 which i didn’t have but i’m going back tomorrow! all proceeds go to “teaching music to children”. seek and ye shall find!

stingers of below

the play the other night was, as anticipated, magnifique. in fact it was so good i saw it both nights, once with famous playwright dawn riddle, who pissed her own face in enjoyment. and not only was it great, but as the night went on, it kept getting better and better, until there were: fart jokes. and: a musical number. really, really enjoyable.

tomorrow there’s the art show opening at the shoppe, don’t forget. the new idea (of two days ago) is to split the shop into a gallery in the front (with also only hand made items) and a free store in the back. good idea / bad idea?

gold-pressed latinum

5zfcwiy0.jpg

yesterday i heard two (2) enactments of the old “stranded w/o wallet” story, and even though i told myself i would no longer go for this scam, i ended up giving two bucks, and then 50 cents. in the first instance, i told myself later that i was buying his story, so here it is, as my story:

yesterday (or i guess two days ago actually), me and a friend drove from springfield to worcester for the purposes of drinking / partying. well, we had a couple bars, we got into a dispute, and he left me here, taking with him my wallet and all my money, IDs and credit cards, which i had left in the car during the whatever. i’m just trying to get back to springfield. i went to all the places, they couldn’t help me. i need $14.75, which is the full price of a bus ticket.

pretty decent, i like “we had a couple bars” (of what?), and i like setting up the current town as “the party town”, and i really like that “empty hand technique” of going out with no ties to anything. but really, whither the lost art of panhandling? remember when grisly dudes / scientist types used to sell their poems on the street? this happened twice to me growing up, and each time i was psyched. it’s such a good racket! a small investment in photocopies, and they’re stuck there captive while you read it and then afterwards, they feel obligated to buy it, before you sspring on them the cost of a buck or two each (which really isn’t that bad for a crazy story you can tell someone later and an artifact). i remember there was one guy with a brian chippendale haircut that sold astrological posters he made, but they weren’t as good as they could’ve been. not like there’s a lot of low-level street hustlers that read this (or any (?)) blog, but let’s raise the bar, folks! let’s be new gods for once!
