ok, this is a test– i need to start recording music again and messing around with music and generally being musically active. right now i have computer stuff i’ve been working on, but that’s a realm of endless tweaking. so…… ten people request songs for me to cover and i will cover them, and post them here before the end of the month. you cannot request a song that you have written, but you can request a song that i’ve never heard. i can’t promise my cover will be faithful. give me a title and a performer. i will only do this if ten people make requests, and i have ways of telling when one person is pretending to be more than one person on the internet. oh, actually, mike benedetti gets one automatically, because he’s been really helping me out lately / always. so, first nine, plus mike.

ok, let’s go– burn it. even lurkers– let’s go.

  3. “Love In This Club” by Usher. (I hope) you will need to find some background singers to help you cover this song.

this is actually a totally serious request, not a joke. it’s for a friend, but the choice of song is specifically for you, it’s not like I asked you to cover “lady lumps” or something, which would just be silly.

um also I think that your performance of this song will be a sexy powerhouse and will cause really awesome cute girls to fall all over you.

  4. jean, i’ll do my best. or rather, i’ll do whatever i think is appropriate at the time. also, “it’s for a friend” is just about the most transparent excuse ever. it’s ok that you like usher!

gabe and lola, i love those songs!

  5. I guess I like Usher… I like this song in its weird combo of confidence, sweet longing, and unfulfilled desire… which is partly why I already like your cover of this song more than usher’s version of it.

but actually, really this is for a friend, who really REALLY likes this song, I don’t want to embarrass him by naming names, but maybe you can guess. the only reason I have to admit that it’s for someone else is that I don’t really know that many songs, the only reason I can identify this song is because said FRIEND sings along every time it comes on the radio… and if I had implied that I was asking you to cover it for *me*, my FRIEND (who will read this at some point) would have made fun of me for not being musically aware enough to come up with my own song, and for stealing *his* song… thus… “for a friend”

(my first thought was “Roadrunner” by jonathan richman, but that is really obvious, and it’s probable that you have covered it already, or will cover it in the future without any prompting…)

  7. Your choice of a song from DESPAIR, DEATH, AND REDEMPSHIRE.

My personal pick would be “Burn in Frozen Wasteland in the Deepest Pits of Hell,” but I’d like to hear whichever song resonates strongest with you.

  9. Okay. This is also no joke. Ludacris- Pimpin’ All Over The World, OR Area Codes. I will not try to cover up my love for ludacris or my desire to hear ludacris covers.

  10. I need to add that if you choose area codes I want you to use “90210″ for all of the area codes, or something to that effect.

  18. Jake, I’m glad you like my Dolly Parton pick–it’s my new favorite song. I can only imagine how majestic your version will, undoubtedly, be. I miss hearing you sing, nothing in NC quite compares to bathing beauties…

  19. OK, so “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler. Yeah it’s kinda lame, reminds me of being a kid and cleaning the house Sunday mornings and listening to Casy Kasem top 40 Countdown. But would make a great cover if you could actually use real explosions!
Also reminds me of where I got the idea….Calvin and Hobbes, of course.

    Calvin: What’s this music?
    Hobbes: It’s “The 1812 Overture.”
Calvin: I kinda like it. Interesting percussion section.
    Hobbes: Those are cannons.
Calvin: And they perform this in crowded concert halls?? Gee, I thought classical music was boring!
