MEET A BROOKLYN GORILLA

lugosijesus

this morning alee peoples came over and shot some film of me playing solitaire, answering a fax, and folding/throwing a paper airplane. ok, i can’t remember what movie i saw it in, but there’s some movie i watched where someone is given maybe an official document, and as a show of contempt he folds it up into a paper airplane and throws it? this probably has happened in a hundred movies. anyway i remember watching one instance of this and getting upset because the airplane was totally sucky- not a good design, and it barely flew out of frame. like, i understand being too angry to make a good paper airplane, but if you’re that angry, aren’t you also too angry to have the idea “i am going to make a paper airplane”? the important part here is that you understand that my airplane was soundly constructed, and delivered to the sky with a good-natured but forceful elan.

oh, one more note, in the movie (the one with the sucky plane), the guy wetted the tip of the plane before he threw it, maybe in his mouth, maybe in a glass of water. at the time i was even more confused, but thought, maybe that’s just someone’s airplane style? anyway i tried it out in this morning’s shoot, and results were inconclusive. anyone ever seen this style / what the fuck movie was this?

the weirdest part of the morning’s shoot was when alee told me to “do that bela lugosi thing again”. i was like “what, be tall dark and handsome? exhibit a lethal sexuality? marry hollywood’s it girl and leave her because she couldn’t cook pork chops? WHAT?”.

DARKNESS BEFORE A STORM

tonight i watched the superbowl at CF’s. as you may expect, we watched it on a damp crystal shroud while horrible chittering beasts and kid gangs roamed the forest substructure. JK! we watched it on tv, sitting on a mattress, eating pretzels and drinking the devil’s mouthwash. the best part of the game (aka the part i remember) was after a commercial for some hand-held cable bullshit thing that had a fake (!) numa numa guy, and then said that it featured the best of the internet, when i realized that there is no best of the internet. we were all psyched when they played “don’t get fooled again” at doritos halftime.

MY DINNER WITH SERPENTOR

OK, here’s a nice story from GI JOE yearbook vol 1 #3, march 1987 about the invention of tiny pizzas. this is for my buddy niloc, who runs the excellent “every slice in NYC” pizza blog SLICE HARVESTER. get your facts straight, B!

more after the cut…

TIME TO RIP

last night i saw LAZY MAGNET at success club, plus a new band featuring vanessa from coughs. lazy magnet is my favorite band, every release, every show. i STRONGLY recommend getting the most recent LP, “He Sought For That Magic By Which All The Glory And Mystic Chivalry Were Made To Shine – or – Is Music Even Good?”, still gettable on the corleone site. i don’t entirely understand how but the record record sounds totally different from the cd– the cd is great songs, the record sounds amazing. same recording. the genius of mastering i guess. jeremy was also selling a “tour edition” of both of his box sets, on two DVDrs, in one package. that’s 9 hours of music! and EVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVERYTHING is killer. if you look you can find a torrent of the first box set plus the corleone release on bit torrent, but like i said, get the record record. get the record record and the mp3s and AB them- the difference really is staggering.

earlier in the week i had two opportunities to see WORK/DEATH- first at mars gas, where the set ended in complete and sudden darkness and silence by blowing the power out, then at building 16 at the tail end of an otherwise tepid jangle-noise dream catcher affair, with scott playing genuinely uplifting, richly harmonic blown out super saturated cathedral music, and closing with a straight cover of i love you, always forever! scott always brings REAL EMOTIONAL POWER matched with immaculate composition and a VERY fine ear for specific texture. some work/death recordings available via mimaroglu music sales. get everything.

both of these guys are amazingly talented and criminally slept-on. if you were wondering what is the greatest contemporary american music, this is it.

OMEGA THE UNKNOWN

0038

penny purtle, in re: my recent lapse, dropped a comment yesterday about what has he been doing the past few months– usually we hang out, i talk about it, he reads about it and so on. now, well, you know what they say, “some unforeseen factor interrupts the orderly flow of events, and without warning, a finely-tuned organism erupts in dischord, violence.” and that’s pretty much how it’s been, except that in addition to dischord and violence (and daring mid-day heists, and counting coup with girls, and eating open-faced cookie dough sandwiches on cookie bread), these past few months have brought about more shows with me and penny’s band, JACOB THE TERRIBLE.

JTT is what was previously called “jacob terrendiblendes” and “the terribles play the music of jacob berendes featuring jacob berendes singing the words part of the music”, and is pretty obviously the amazing band the terribles, as heartbreakers to my tom petty. recordings “soon”. anyone know of a good (cheap, trade, or free) studio set up for a fairly straight-ahead rock band for whom discernible lyrics are ideal?

i like family circus, and often have to explain why. uh, it’s cute! of course, like everything, i like the old ones best- really interesting layouts and angles, which combine well with the circular frame to make it seem like you’re looking through a god-telescope, reinforcing that “this is real life” feeling. also, despite being one-panel gag comics, they weren’t lazy! complicated backgrounds, crowd scenes, judicious zipatone– shit you don’t see in the newspaper anymore.

yesterday i went to meet kokekakiki for our weekly very early morning (considering) chess game at the lesser coffee place. against all odds i get there first, at our agreed-upon time of 8:30, when i realize the board blew out of my bike basket somewhere along the way, and i gotta go back. i find it on my own driveway with a perfect tire tread down the center of the obverse side but otherwise ok, and ride back. now late, i ride to the place and explain, it’s not a problem, she understands. i tell her i rode the whole distance 3 times, and sure sure, she understands. i produce the board with the tire tread but otherwise fine, right, she believes me. my shame, or rather, my weird feeling, is that it’s entirely true. i mean, i’m not one for lies but it would’ve been better right, if i just slept late and manufactured a way to get the board half-mussed as an alibi. would’ve been cuter. i’m embarassed to be stuck with the casual truth. kind of like how people play pool where if it isn’t on purpose it doesn’t count.

anyway, chess set is in production! hope to screen the boards next week and have it up soon…
