dudes (and this means you, matt carroll), i am super looking for the song “i hate you”, by edge of etiquette, aka the song from the bus in star trek IV, which was written and performed by the punk in the scene (above) who was actually the associate producer. the song was never on a soundtrack but people ssay that it is “floating around on the internet”. well, this is the internet, let’s get it together.
also, today i learned that all the songs are good, not just (although that one’s the best).
as it happens, mike t and i are leaving for miami tomorrow, to return saturday or sunday, so the show with karl blau is something i might not be at (but will happen without me). well, actually i’m leaving for providence tonight. HBML will be on a one-week hiatus.
i’m going on this trip primarily as ballast, but i’m still pretty psyched. it’ll be nice to get out of worcester for a week, brainstorm / shoot the shit on a long car ride, see gas stations in different states, and catch a little bit of miami’s weirdo art scene.
speaking of weirdo art scenes, the worcester cultural commission’s annual fellowship grant i was applying for is due next monday, the day after i get back. the fellowship, of all the grants they give out, is the sweetest peach, but even if i don’t get it, it’ll be good just to finish the application, just to prove to myself that it’s no big deal. of course it goes without saying that i alone could further the arts in worcester further than anyone else given an award of, say, $5000.
last night i went to the weird fake cafe in the basement of the clarku cafeteria to see lars and mariah’s band open for a bunch of riot folk acts. it’s a move jess singer used to do which i always admired– go to the show just to see the opening band. it felt pretty right.
the first time i saw lars and mariah’s band they were called “clarisse porch cat”, and MZ was playing drums. this time they were called “the helens”, there were no drums, and the performance suffered for it, but it was still great. mariah’s a really good singer and when her and lars sing together it’s like X. also the music is really good and weird and the guitar tone is that tone i like where it’s halfway clean. mariah is 16, which is another reason i like the band– thinking about how many awesome bands she’s going to be in in the future.
like i said there were no drums, so i told them to get a drum machine, which is something i find myself telling just about every other person in my life (because of gerty farish and lazy magnet). i should really get a drum machine just to loan out to people– anybody got one they don’t use?
my birthday’s coming up on the 16th. i guess i have a hard time asking for stuff without seeming like i’m begging, but you have to make calls if you want to get results. if you’re the giving type, i would like spirulina powder, which jeremy assured me is good for my body type. additionally, i would like to go to a . ok.
so anyway it’s july and i’ve been enjoying those july-y things like being hot, or maybe it rains a ton, and ian (cool breeze) was in town for a week and it was great. the other day was of course independence day, and on the fourth naturally there’s fireworks but also on the days leading up, because let’s face it, you’re having a cook-out, and fireworks are fun. as hakim bey , “gunpowder more useful to frighten malign demons, delight children, fill the air with brave & risky-smelling haze.”. this year i didn’t seek out the big fireworks show at the park, but i did sit quietly by the window in the dark just listening to the neighborhood fireworks whistle, explode, and machine gun, and listening to the sounds bounce all around the valley. it ruled.
a classic from james lee (whose wiggy sig i eventually decoded) and someone else (whose identity i was never able to discern). any nice folks who want to send mail can now reliably do so to: jacob c/o HBML 420 pleasant st worcester MA 01609. i’m trying to get back into regular mail. let’s see how long that lasts.
i’m playing two shows this weekend- today at Feed Your Head Books (272 Essex Street Salem, MA) it’s an art exhibit about creative reuse- i’m worried that it will be not a show but a room in which i’m playing for people that are milling about clutching cocktails and brochures. tomorrow i’m playing with dan beckman, dan shea, and morgan coe’s band “the stay home ramblers” at robin and nadav’s house in boston – “7pm-ish, Bring some veg munchables if you can. 18 Amory Street, Apt 3R Cambridge (easy access from Central Square)”.
if you want to go to these and you live in worcester give me a call STAT as i’m looking for rides. pretty cold, i know. i’ll pay gas and bring music, or read your book aloud to you.
UPDATE jim and sheryl-ann are partying me to salem! thanks!
i think my little datebook shimmied it’s way out of my pocket last night on the ride home from aryder’s house. in the words of dan langlois, “f”. hey, if anyone wants to go to the , email or call me. because i want to go, but not alone. driving from worcester is a plus.
ok, if you live in worcester you absolutely have to vote for me in the bost^H^H^H^Hworcester phoenix . i’m actually on the ballot this time. it’s way better to actually get a physical copy and send it in, rather than do the online version, because i think they may have a tendancy to discard the online stuff (this prognosis has no basis in actual fact). but if you’re out of town or you know you’ll never make it to the post office, please do fill it out online, but be sure an enter your real name and address and email. i don’t think they accept ballots from out-of-towners. also, be sure and vote mission sequence: life for best punk band, feisel (sic) best hardcore (sic) band, and if you really want to go above and beyond the call of duty, write-in cat and bird hospital for best folk act.
i’m in little andrwe’s room right now. i went ahead and took the week off from work, because i’m that kind of guy. in addition to giving me time to work on important musical projects and visiting brown university, this gives me more excuses to check email by phone (i’m addicted!). so send me love and keep your sentances short and your punctuation uncomplicated!
