a few weeks ago me and nik perry were in the liquor store getting swamp water supplies when he noticed that the nice indian ladies who work at this particular liquor store had drawn a beard and mustache on the babe calendar. we broed down a little about this compulsion, then as we were leaving, the lady said something in hindi to her mother, butme and nik both thought she was talking to us, and we both heard “good luck, archimedes!” and we both didn’t know how to respond, which is probably for the best.

the other day there was a guy at the grocery store going on and on in the meat section about how good the haddock was, to point of stopping people who were walking by and saying “you gotta try the haddock!”. i told him “you sound like my wife– it seems like every night she has a haddock!”. the guy said “huh.”. i’m sorry but this did happen, and i’m sorry.

karaoke was fun, i sang a few, including “fernando“, which was just out of my range so on the high notes i had to grab my throat and physically change the shape of my windpipe, which is something i read about akon doing.

the show last night was also fun, although for no reason i was totally out of it. as in, my brain and body were all weird. i liked all the bands, especially grass widow, and it was super great to see matt tobey tear on the guitar! and the house totally smelled “crusty”, which is cool.

kevin driscoll has a new screwed-down mixtape, it’s good, even though it’s named after a kind of fart: NIGHT WIND. george washington carver myers also has a screwed mix tape that just came out, but the source material is all dancehall, and when you screw down the huge bass drops already present in reggae they turn into a sound like a cable is a little loose, or something is improperly grounded. my screw tape is coming out next week, dead serious, cd + download, another “new trend” release.

here’s the flyer for tomorrow’s B*X+Q. nik perry made it (the flyer):

players playin

today me and purtle have the first real performances of the play we’re in, with live strangers. but i’m more psyched about this (email from anne):

Come One, Come All! See the Dragon Sorcerer as he meets his match in our five heros.
Friday and Saturday May 9th and 10th Doors open at 7:00 Curtain at 7:30
First Unitarian Church, 90 Main St. Worcester

The Dragon Sorcerer Play is a culmination of our school years worth of work at the Stone Soup Learning Coop. The students and staff researched knights and ninjas, learned about the literary concept of a quest and all it’s elements, learned about CORI laws and reform, created a story line together, and then a student took the story line and wrote a wonderful play with it. Now we are building sets, making costumes, and rehearsing, so that we can give the performance of our lives. We’d really love for you to join as and share in the amazing work these students have accomplished this year.

carolynn is in this, and plays an ogre whose power is burping, which is typecasting, but whatever.

also, the overheard bitch album is done and available for download. or pick it up as a double cd greatest hits debut. i think it’s eight minutes total, with celebrity remixes by me and little andrew. overheard bitch is kpars and nrevs, and the songs are all (or mostly) things they overheard people say, regarding bitches, rapped with wanton disregard for rhythm or being near the microphone. the album is called “what are you smiling at, bitch?”, it’s really really weird.

Tribute to Stockhausen / Tribute to Pimp C

ok, just getting the computer music muscles going again… here’s my two-track tribute to Stockhausen and Pimp C.

the first track was made by trying to open up a file of kontakte that had not finished torrenting, somehow it got mixed up with the entire UKG album, which was also not finished downloading.

i’m using audacity, but i feel like it’s not as good as soundedit 16 was 12 years ago. which is to say, the response time is bad, between me hitting space bar and the sound playing. this is weird right? why am i moving backwards?

in the mists of sassafras

dudes (and this means you, matt carroll), i am super looking for the song “i hate you”, by edge of etiquette, aka the song from the bus in star trek IV, which was written and performed by the punk in the scene (above) who was actually the associate producer. the song was never on a soundtrack but people ssay that it is “floating around on the internet”. well, this is the internet, let’s get it together.

also, today i learned that all the bubble puppy songs are good, not just this one (although that one’s the best).

the shady secret of pink lemonade

16-ive-got-sticker-eyes.jpg

leonardr just released his first album in five years. for reasons that are his own, he named it omne animal triste. if i were to pick it, the single would be sweet & lowbrow.

you can also see the pretty off-the-cuff LDR best hits comp i’ve been compiling on lilah’s request: POTCLDRBHC.

as is the custom with every show i play, i’m starting to really dread this 24 hour show (which is next friday- the 27th, 9pm - 9pm).

BRin’

today i came up with the name i was racking my brain for the other day: ali farka tourĂ©. here’s a few mp3s from one of my favorite blogs, the aptly titled “awesome tapes from africa“. listen especially to the first one, “ali baliky lalo”, because i’m totally going to rip it off so hard. like, worse than “jet boy jet girl”. AFT is often referred to as “the john lee hooker of africa”, enough that the comparison has become tiresome.

i started using google reader the other day for all my RSS feeds, and even though the scope and power of google freaks me out, i have to say i’m pretty satisfied. RSS, if you don’t know, is an automatic way of aggregating all the websites you check regularly and displaying only the items that have been added since you last checked. if you check a lot of different stuff it’s really helpful to have everything on one screen, and it’s great for blogs like “awesome tapes…”, or my other favorite blog, pulog1, neither of which update all the time, but you want to catch them when they do.

state of the union

drawing at MZ’s house last night while he worked on the zombie painting he’s been working on for months now. obviously i could never do that- i can barely wait for paint to dry. the other thing i realized i can’t do is let a drawing sit in my sketchbook- almost everything i ever draw ends up getting used in something nowadays. and even backwards through history, as i’ve been raiding old sketchbooks for pictures (and lyrics).

the other day i won a business card raffle for a free lunch at the broadway, for me and 15 friends. we had to sit through this 5 minute sales presentation about financial planning, but it was worth it. i kept getting the feeling that we were scamming this dude, but in fact we were telling totally the truth. i do run a record label, we are all in bands, this is our careers.

closed the store early today because it’s snowing like a MF, and i cancelled tonight’s event too- matt carroll in 19th century british naval character doing mad libs with store denizens. or should i say, i rescheduled. stop in wednesday 5 - 8pm and get a dose. BYO nouns, verbs, etc.. ok, i have to not fritter away this snow day like i have done almost every other snow day in my long life, i have actual things to do right now, things that before the storm i was hair-tearing about not having the time for. lots of sewing, some silk screening, listening to the new uke of spaces corners LP. ok, the USC LP came fresh in the mail yesterday from somewhere in dan beckmanistan, alongside the uke of… / erin tobey “on the phone” split. i listened to the tape at the store, it rules so hard, and you can listen to both individual sets online via the “phoning it in” webpage, alongside other epic nods like BARR, daniel higgs, jana hunter, jad fair, daniel johnston, microphones/mt eerie, thanksgiving, mountain goats, jolie holland… EPIC!!!!! nadav you’re the king of the air and the wire and the other wire (which is a system of wires). i’ll have a set for you soon ok?

Li’l Bendy Electronic Noise Vessel

Li'l Bendy

this is a circuit bent instrument i made- it used to be a novelty pager, connecting to no one. now, it connects to you! five body contacts on the top alter the sounds made when you press one of the four buttons. in other words, pressing two or more of the contacts makes you a mysterious and essential part of the circuit! and how hard you press changes the voltage, which changes the sound again. sounds difficult, but is totally intuitive. good for babies. contains instructions on further modifications you can do yourself, most notably installing a line-out jack. takes 2 AA batteries, which are included. color and stickers may vary.

Li’l Bendy - $10 postpaid

lilbendy1.mp3

mp3 of the Li’l Bendy in action– first, solo, then with another Li’l Bendy, then with whistling accompaniment. name that tune!

what you gonna do, without your ass?

i just wrote up a nice big post here at the clark library, then i went internet searching for a nice picture of sun ra to include and the GD computer conked out. anyway here’s a terse UL of the important LIs:

  • big up to whoever wrote “FUCK OFF” and “508 GORE HOUNDS” over the ICP neighbor’s “CLOWN” graffito on the fence outside my house (it wasn’t me).
  • sun ra as a being who already holds all the music that will ever be written, whose job it is to release in an order that makes sense, and to progress the species, but the path from 1940s orchestral big band to minimoog elbow music can also be taken backwards, which is what i’m doing right now.
  • i’m having an art show at the store, the opening is this friday from 5 to 8pm, with cookies and suicide soda.
  • me and jon “angel” knapp are showing “space is the place” soon.
