Wolf Man For Sale
Special offer!
I was cleaning up my room and I found a box of Mothers News issue #32s, from February 2013. Ten years ago exactly! Not only was this a fun issue (I love writing about February) but the centerspread on this was especially sick-- it's a large poster (roughly 17x22") of Lon Chaney Jr., in his role as the Wolf Man, from the 1941 movie of that name.
I ran this picture in the paper mostly because I wanted a huge picture of the Wolf Man to hang on my own wall. I was happy to learn later that others wanted this experience as well. In the ten years since this was published I've walked into many different rooms where this hung proudly and it never fails to make me smile.
In the interest of continuing this experience I'm now offering a bulk rate on this one issue-- for $10 post paid I'll send you 3 copies. Put one on the shelf, hang one in the boudoir, and hang the other in the practice space. If you don't have a practice space then hang two in the boudoir, or give one away as a gift. There is no benefit to keeping 2 in the library.

I find that there are many advantages to having one or more large posters of the wolf man on display. I could certainly imagine someone finding inspiration from it by imagining the wolf man on their trail, an ever-lurking agent of entropy. But personally my inspiration derives from imagining that I'm the wolf man, and that I will leap over whatever structures are put in place to stop me and bite the throat out of anything on the other side without remorse. The middleground here of course is imagining that the wolf man is your ally. Listen, you are free to imagine this scenario in any direction, or to not imagine it at all. The ball's in your court.
In addition to this cool poster this issue has writing about wolves of course, the Roman celebration of Lupercalis, Zeppo Marx, "tips and tricks" (incl lemon riff), plus comics and of course Sophia Tintori's celebrated "Invertebrate of the Month" column.
I don't know why I have a box of this one issue left and very little of anything else, I guess I just did a worse job distributing this one issue than any other, which makes this actually the rarest issue. How about that! You don't have to have read other issues for this to make sense, there's no narrative throughline other than one month follows another.
Again, the deal is you get 3 copies of this one issue, that's mandatory. You can't get just 1, but that's ok because like I said you're going to want one for the library and one for the boudoir and one for the prac space (or stereo boudoir). If you want more that's no problem but for bookkeeping reasons I'm going to ask you to keep it to a multiple of 3. Every order will also get one other random issue and some stickers. Make sure to include your current address on the order form and definitely send me a pic when you hang it up somewhere.

- OK if you want to just read this issue (or any other), I have put all Mothers News back issues online. They're in the castle library but here's the direct link: [link].
- Olivia's band RONG has a bandcamp page here: [bandcamp]. Recently they got evicted from their Boston practice space along with every other band so the building could get sold and turned into some sort of biotech facility. A scene can't exist without certain types of structures and a band practice spot is essential! There's a little bit about this on Reportermatt's instagram: [instagram] although the reportage is pretty light. some crucial additions in the comments:
There was a lot said in the interview that wasn’t included in this reel, so i’m going to say it here: this issue is affecting hundreds of tenants who were told by developers that they would not be evicted until an adequate alternate rehearsal space was provided. This issue is also situated within a larger pattern of gentrification that is hurting artists & residents across boston and many other places. There are tons of people actively organizing to save this building & advocate for better support & protections for artists living in working this city, including the #artstaysherecoalition and a rally organized this past sunday by @bostonpsl . Also massive shout out to @citylife.vidaurbana and all of the other housing justice groups organizing to keep residents from evictions & unfair housing practices across the city
Here's a link to the main #artstayshere website [link] and here's a link to an upcoming meeting about this issue tomorrow (Wednesday February 8th) if you're local to Boston: [link]
